Pharma Talk #4

Hi, today I am going to share an interesting fact which have been recently developed. How many types of drug delivery systems are there? We know about these routes, and I am not discussing about any of them, rather, an new unique dosage form of which I am about write. The concept of "MICROSPONGE" takes place to remove some difficulties regarding drug distribution and is often considered a costly effective method . However, it is a drug delivery system where MICROSPONGES are microscopic spheres capable of absorbing sking secretions, therefore reducing oiliness and shine from the skin.

Spherical particles composed of clusters of even tinier spheres are capble of holding four times their weight in skin secretions. Microsponge particles are extremely small, inert, indestructible spheres that do not pass through the skin. Rather, they collect in the tiny nooks and crannies of the skin and slowly release the entrapped drug, as the skin needs it. The microsponge system can prevent excessive accumulation of ingredients within the epidermis and the dermis. Potentially, the microsponge system can signigicantly reduce the irritation of effective drugs without reducing their efficacy. The empty spheres are then washed away with the cleansing. Thus, they produce new generation of very well-tolerated and highly efficacious, novel products. The size of the Microsponges can be varied, usually from 5-300 micrometre in diameter, depending upon the degree of smoothness or after feel required for the end formula. Basically, the Microsponge particles are too large to be absorbed into the skin and these add a measure of safety to these microsponge materials.

Although the microsponge size may vary, a typical 25 micrometre sphere can have upto 250000 pores and an internal pore structure equivalent to 10 ft in length, providing a total pore volume of about 1 ml/gm.
